CHARLESTON, Ill.  – The American Red Cross will host a blood drive on December 5 supported by the Zeta Rho Chapter of Delta Tau Delta from 1-5 p.m. in the Lawson Hall Lobby.

The blood drive is open to all students and faculty of Eastern Illinois University, as well as members from the Charleston community.

One pint of blood is taken during the donation and the process usually takes about an hour. There will be snacks and water for anyone who donates. Online appointments and walk-ins are available. The last time slot for donations is 5 p.m. Call 1-800-RED-CROSS to check availability for walk-ins.

People can donate a pint of blood every 56 days. Donors are encouraged to eat a meal prior to giving blood and drink plenty of water before and after. A photo ID is required at the time of donation.

Blood donation requirements include a minimum weight of 115 pounds and minimum age of 17. A 16-year-old may donate blood with written parental consent. There is no upper age limit for donating blood. Many health conditions and medications do not prevent someone from donating blood. People taking insulin, blood pressure, thyroid, and cholesterol medications, aspirin, antidepressants, and hormone replacement can donate blood.

Since 1881, The American Red Cross has saved lives everyday through blood donations. The organization is committed to fulfilling the needs of the American people through safe and reliable blood services through voluntary donations. 40 percent of the blood and blood products in our country come from The American Red Cross. Every two seconds someone receives a unit of blood and someone always needs blood. The American Red Cross has a mission to fulfill this need.
