Eastern Illinois University’s police department takes on a graduate assistant for the first time.

Graduate Assistant JaLisa Smith says her responsibilities through UPD include organizing events, running social media pages and coordinating with the Panther Shuttle.

Smith says working with the Panther Shuttle takes up most of her day as she acts as a liaison between students and the Shuttle.

Smith also says she and Police Chief Kent Martin bounce ideas off each other for student-officer socials.

One of the department’s events is Coffee with the Cops.

Smith says at this events students get to interact with officers in a social situation, while enjoying free coffee and Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
